Smith machines are guided-barbell systems where the bar travels on vertical or angled rails. The rail alignment is the most critical part of the build, and it needs to be confirmed before the bar is loaded. The frame goes up first: base, uprights, and top cross-member. The uprights need to be confirmed vertical before the cross-member is tightened, because the cross-member torque pulls the uprights toward each other and will lock any existing lean into the frame. Guide rails attach to the inside face of each upright. On most smith machine designs, the rails are separate from the uprights and bolt to them at multiple points. The rail bolt holes are pre-drilled and the rails slot into a channel in the upright before being bolted. Both rails need to be parallel and at the same depth from the front face of the uprights. A rail that is 1mm further from the upright face than the opposite rail will cause the bar to bind at one point in its travel. The barbell carriage slides on the rails and needs to be fitted before the top cross-member is on, because the carriage is usually wider than the upright opening at the top. Fitting the carriage after the cross-member is in place is not possible. Safety hooks rotate from the bar and lock onto pins in the uprights at each height position. Every pin position needs to be tested before the machine is used under load. A pin that the safety hook does not fully engage is a safety issue.
