Laundry and garage assembly covers utility shelving, laundry cabinets, garage storage racks, and workbenches. These spaces are often awkward: the floor is uneven, the walls are not plumb, and the ceiling height is lower than in the rest of the house. All of those conditions are managed with the right sequence and tools.
Laundry cabinets are built in the same sequence as kitchen cabinets: base cabinet first, wall cabinet second. The base cabinet level is set using adjustable legs before the carcass is fixed to the wall. The wall cabinet is fixed to studs. A wall cabinet fixed only to plasterboard will pull away from the wall when loaded with detergent and cleaning products.
Garage storage racks are freestanding or wall-mounted. Freestanding racks on a garage floor need adjustable feet because garage floors slope toward the drain. A rack that is not level on a sloped floor will lean toward the low side when loaded. Wall-mounted racks need to be fixed to the wall framing, not just the cladding.
Workbenches are built in the same sequence as a heavy-duty table: frame first, top second, adjustable feet last. A workbench top that is not level will cause liquids to pool on one side and tools to roll off. The adjustable feet are set after the bench is in position.
