Storage and hallway furniture covers a wide range: shoe cabinets, cube shelving systems, hallway consoles, coat racks, and utility shelving. The common requirement across all types is that the unit needs to be level and stable before it carries any load, because fixing a level issue after the unit is loaded means removing the load first.
Cube shelving systems including KALLAX and similar modular grids have a sequence that determines whether the unit is stable. On a large grid such as a four-by-four, the outer frame goes together before the dividers are inserted. The dividers lock the outer frame square. On a grid where the dividers are inserted before the outer frame is squared, the dividers lock the out-of-square position.
Shoe cabinets with a flap-down door have a hinge sequence that sets whether the door sits flush. The hinge plate is fitted before the door is placed. The door position is set by the hinge arm adjustment. Both screws need to be confirmed before the door is released, because a door released too early will swing to one side.
Hallway consoles and coat racks are usually wall-mounted or freestanding. Wall-mounted pieces need to be fixed to studs. A coat rack fixed only to plasterboard will pull away from the wall over time.
