Office chair assembly has more steps than the instruction sheet implies. The gas cylinder seats into the base star by gravity. The mechanism plate seats onto the cylinder top by gravity. Neither connection is bolted, but each needs to be fully seated before the next component is placed. A cylinder that is not fully seated will drop under the weight of the first person to sit in the chair.
The mechanism plate orientation is the most commonly misread step. The plate has a front and a back that are not always obvious from the casting. The seat bolt holes on the plate align with the seat shell only when the plate is in the correct orientation. Forcing the seat bolts into a misaligned plate will cross-thread the inserts.
Armrests on chairs with adjustable arms attach to the seat shell from underneath. The bolt positions are pre-threaded inserts in the shell. Each bolt needs to be started by hand before being driven, because a bolt driven into a misaligned insert will strip the insert on the first use. All armrest bolts are confirmed at full torque before the chair is handed over.
Headrests attach after the seat is assembled. The stem inserts into the backrest and needs to be confirmed at the correct height before the lock collar is tightened.
